Throw Back Thursday!

JAMES MONTGOMERY

It's that time of the week when we look back at something for no real reason other than we forgot to tell you about some news a little while back. On October the 14th our Principal James Montgomery popped along to Gem's Dance Academy in Birmingham to teach two workshops for their competitive students. We caught up with him to find out how it went.

"Well I have to say that the students at Gem's crushed the sassy Street choreo I threw at them. As soon as Katy Perry's Swish came on they were all ready to hit the routine hard and they certainly did that...and THEN SOME!  We then went straight into the Freestyle choreo, attacking that head on too! These girls worked so hard on a challenging collection of moves with advanced jump and spin combos and created some fantastic styling themselves, it was an awesome workshop. Thanks to fellow IDTA teacher Gemma Welch for inviting me to teach for her at her wonderful school, it was such a pleasure to work with your talented students."  James Montgomery

As if that wasn't enough fun, the very next day Vice Principal Louise Usher joined James to teach a Charleston Master class at the fabulous Aura Dance Studios in nearby Solihull. We asked Louise how it went.

"It was so much fun assisting James with the Charleston Master Class, we both had such a fab time and it was great learning opportunity for me. All of the attendees got so involved and looked like they had a blast, there was so much energy and laughter in the room I didn’t want it to end! It was also lovely to have to opportunity to visit such a stunning studio, Aura is beautiful. Thank you to our IDTA colleague Kate at Aura for inviting us. We had a great time and hope to get the opportunity to share our work with your fabulous students again sometime." Louise Usher

What an exciting time here at SimplyDance, with classes underway once more in Egham the whole team is jazzed up.  We are sooooo happy to be back and are lucky enough to welcome not only lots of lovely new students but the fabulous Natalie rejoins the SimplyDance team! What better way to celebrate than by attending the IDTA South East Area day in Addlestone earlier this month.

The team enjoyed lectures in Ballroom, Latin, Freestyle and Street with our colleague and friend Miss Keely Catt sharing some excellent quads Street work with us all. We then were treated to some brilliant exercises in Charleston and Jive from the fantastic Hayley Stevens, which we are already using in our warm up for our Latin American and Ballroom Class.

It was a busy summer for the SimplyDance team attending the Annual IDTA Congress and learning from excellent trainers and coaches in a whole host of dance styles.  We were honoured to lecture at the event where James and Louise took to the floor to offer some Lyrical Salsa choreography for fellow members.

It was so well received with laughter all the way and the past president commeting in his write up for the IDTA's Dance International Magazine:

"To complete our morning program we enjoyed James Montgomery's usual open and witty personality whilst he presented a very usable Salsa Routine.  He has such skill in making his presentations so enjoyable"

Richard Hopkins IDTA.

Now we all can't wait to see you all on Saturday to put all these chunks of knowledge into action! See you all soon guys and girls, let's DANCE!

Today was packed full of amazing workshops including absolutely beautiful Slow Freetyle work from the trainer of the current reigning world champion. Then it was fabulous and hillarious Musical Theatre lectures including a number from Wicked and then Commercial Street, Cheerleading and African Dance too!  What a day!

Teacher Training Day In London

JAMES MONTGOMERY

Our teachers gave up their time yesterday for a hugely long day of lectures of world class caliber at the IDTA London Seminar. As teachers of dancing we believe it is so important to continually develop our teaching methods and practices to better equip us to train our students at SimplyDance.

The Team off to the training day Sun 1st Feb

It was up and at em at 6am as we made our way into central London, a couple of tube lines later and we arrived at the wonderful and very beautiful Lancaster Hotel.

With work on developing action in Balloom dancing, above gold level choreography in Latin American, Hip Hop fusion, huge fun with childrens work and Salsa Casino style too, it was an excellent and very useful day.

Following the lectures were treated to caberet performances from the 6 time World Ballroom Champions, Dance Master UK and Miss Dance Great Britain winners too. What an incredible day with colleagues and friends.

Blast from the past

Karlyne Oakes

As I walked through the door the  costumes, smell of hairspray and the crazy music pumping from the speakers immediately took me back to when I was 13 and I used to spend my Sunday's competing in Freestyle. Except this time instead of being the one who was being judged I was given the honour of being the Judge!

I was asked to go down to Southampton to be 1 of 3 adjudicators in an friendly competition , judging freestyle and streetdance. As soon as I fell back into the crazy pace of the music and even crazier pace of the dancing I really started to admire the standard of dancing that was coming through. From the 4 year olds through to the 14 year olds everyone put their heart and soul into their dancing And there was some fantastic moves and routines on the floor.

I had a AWESOME day and well done to everyone who competed, you were all brilliant.
